An 18-year-old Springfield Township man who ordered two men to kill his girlfriend's former boyfriend, but pointed out the wrong man, will spend the next five years in prison.
Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge Patrick Dinkelacker sentenced Kevin Harley on Monday in the March 22 death of James Turner. Harley was convicted of complicity to involuntary manslaughter
Prosecutor David Prem told Dinkelacker that Turner's family realized it was not Harley who pulled the trigger, but blamed him because he was the person who set the crime in motion.
"He's dead for life. I want Mr. Harley to understand my brother can't return from this in five years," said Turner's sister, Priscilla Sims.
In exchange for Harley's guilty plea, prosecutors dropped charges of murder, complicity and illegally having a weapon.
Harley's friends, who have not been arrested, fatally shot Turner as he walked on Birch Ridge Drive, prosecutors said. Springfield Township police said they are continuing to investigate.
Turner, 32, of Seven Hills, didn't know his killers, police said.
Harley and the person he allegedly wanted to kill had problems in the past, prosecutors said.
The judge cautioned Harley Monday.
"I hope you go (to prison) and learn your lesson," Dinkelacker told Harley. "If you don't, the justice system will still be here."
