READING - Sports and other extracurricular activities in Reading Community Schools would be eliminated next school year if voters reject an operating levy on Nov. 2.
The Reading Board of Education last week approved the cuts, representing $750,000 in savings, in the district's 2005-06 budget.
"It will impact every aspect of our organization," Superintendent Scott Inskeep said. "Because of our recent success, academically, we're trying to protect the academic program as much as we can."
The 1,400-student district last month received the highest rating, Excellent, on the state's 2003-04 Local Report Card.
About 70 percent to 75 percent of Reading students participate in an after-school activity.
Besides extracurriculars, other cuts on the list are:
One technology team position.
Three secretarial positions.
Three educational aide positions.
Elimination of all district extended time except for high school guidance.
One home school coordinator.
One custodial position.
One district athletic director position.
The cuts would be in addition to the reductions made for the 2004-05 school year after the failure of the March operating levy. Those cuts equaled $500,000 and, over two years, amounts to $1.35 million already been cut from the district budget.
On Nov. 2, Reading is seeking a $1.4 million continuing levy for daily operations. The owner of a $100,000 home would pay an additional $203 annually.
