Shelf life: What's happening at area bookstores

Donorboy by Brendan Halpin (Villard; $12.95). After writing two memoirs (It Takes A Worried Man, Losing My Faculties), Halpin's fiction debut is the story of a teenage girl whose parents die in an accident. But Rosalind had two mothers as parents. It is not until their death that she meets her sperm donor father, who now has custody of her. All I Did Was Ask: Conversations with Writers, Actors, Musicians, and Artists by Terry Gross (Hyperion; $24.95). The host of National Public Radio's Fresh Air, collects her favorite interviews., Gross speaks at 2 p.m. Sunday at Miami University's Hall Auditorium, then visits the Oxford Lane Branch of the Lane Libraries, 15 S. College Ave., Oxford at 3:30 p.m. for a reception and signing. Both events are free, and the book will be available. Information: 523-7531.

The Craft of Fiction is a three-part series for would-be writers in which three local authors share their insights. It kicks off next Tuesday with Brock Clarke talking about the role of place, continues Sept. 29 with Stephen Birmingham on the "three people a novelist needs most" and ends Sept. 30 with Michael Griffith on comedy. 6-7:30 p.m. each night, Mercantile Library, Mercantile Library Building, 414 Walnut St., downtown; 621-0717. $30 members; $40, nonmembers.
