Archibald to coach Long Beach ABA team
Enquirer staff and wire reports
Former Cincinnati Royal Nate Archibald, a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame and the NBA's 50th anniversary all-time team, was hired as coach of the American Basketball Association champion Long Beach Jam.
Archibald is the only player in NBA history to lead the league in scoring and assists in the same season, averaging 34 points and 11.4 assists a game with the Kansas City-Omaha Kings during the 1972-73 season.
Archibald, 56, succeeds Earl Cureton, hired as coach of the ABA's Orange County Crush this month. Archibald's coaching experience includes a stint as coach of the Fayetteville Patriots of the National Basketball Developmental League.
Cincinnati will field an ABA expansion team. Former Wright State coach Ralph Underhill will serve as general manager and coach.
JAZZ: John Stockton's No. 12 will be retired by the Utah Jazz in November, honoring a point guard who spent his entire 19-year career with the team. Stockton, the NBA career leader in assists and steals, retired in 2003.
ROCKETS: Houston Rockets guard Bob Sura had surgery to repair a herniated disc in his lower back. His rehabilitation is expected to last at least eight weeks, about two weeks after the season opener against Sacramento Nov. 6.
Swimming
WORLDS IN INDY: Olympic gold medalists Michael Phelps, Aaron Peirsol, Natalie Coughlin and Amanda Beard head the Team USA men's and women's rosters named for the 7th FINA World Championships at Indianapolis.
The Oct. 7-11 meet will be in two 25-meter temporary pools being built inside Conseco Fieldhouse, home of the Indiana Pacers.
Phelps, who won six golds and two bronze medals in Athens, is entered in the 200-meter freestyle, 200 butterfly, 100 individual medley, 200 IM, 400 IM and 800 freestyle relay. Peirsol, who won three gold medals, will swim in the 50, 100 and 200 backstroke events.
Hockey
NHL LOCKOUT: With an NHL lockout in place, more than 150 players have signed to play in European leagues, including Markus Naslund with Modo (Sweden), Jaromir Jagr with Kladmo (Czech Republic) and Ilya Kovalchuk with AK Bars Kazan (Russia).
Most of the players have lockout clauses that allow them to return to the NHL if and when the labor impasse ends. For now, European teams are taking advantage.
Modo also signed twins Daniel and Henrik Sedin (Vancouver), Niklas Sundstrom (Montreal), Pierre Hedin (Toronto) and Peter Forsberg (Colorado). Forsberg said he will play the entire season with Modo.
Golf
FREE CRC CLINIC: The Cincinnati Recreation Commission and Billy Casper Golf will conduct a free clinic Oct. 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Dunham Golf Course for persons with physical or mobility impairments.
The clinic is open to youths, teens, adults and seniors and will feature golf pros from ForeHope who have specific training and extensive experience in working with people with disabilities, adaptive equipment and carts. Registration is required through CRC or by calling (513) 352-4028.

TRACK: John Capel received a public warning after a positive test for marijuana that led to him being replaced on the U.S. 400-meter relay team at the Olympics.
