WOODLAWN - Raymond L. Affolter, former financial secretary for the Plumbers, Pipefitters and Mechanical Equipment Service Union Local No. 392, died of pneumonia Sept. 6 at Parkview Nursing Home. He was 84.
A pipefitter by trade, Mr. Affolter received his training through the union's joint apprentice program. He took the full-time paid position as secretary in the 1980s.
He served with the Navy during World War II, then came home to Cincinnati and joined several fraternal organizations with his fellow vets.
Mr. Affolter was a member of the Moose Lodge, the Eagles, the American Legion and the Shriners.
"After he came out of World War II, those organizations were very popular," said his friend and attorney, Harold G. Korbee, who is also an attorney for the union.
Mr. Affolter gave generously to Shriners Hospital and other charities.
He had no children and has no survivors. His wife of 31 years, Mildred C. "Irish" Affolter, died in 1977.
Together they built their home in Woodlawn with their own hands - an accomplishment that Mr. Affolter was proud of. He wanted to make a gift of the house - which sits in a wooded area - to Woodlawn, but because he had to move into a nursing home, it had to be sold instead.
Mr. Affolter was a 50-year member of the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry of the United States and Canada.
He was also a member of the Local Order of Moose Lodge No. 2, a life member of the Highland Aerie 449, Fraternal Order of Eagles, a life member of the American Legion Robert E. Bentley Post No. 50, a 50-year member of the LaFayette Lodge No. 81 F&AM, a member of the Kilwinning Chapter No. 97, Royal Arch Masons, 50-year member of Oola Khan Grotto of the Mystic Order of the Veiled Prophets of the Enchanted Realm; a life member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry Valley of Cincinnati; a member of the Syrian Temple and a Gold Book Member of the Shriners Hospital for Children.
Services have been held. Burial was at Arlington Memorial Gardens.
Memorials: Plumbers, Pipefitters and Mechanical Equipment Service Union Local No. 392 Joint Apprentice Training School, 1300 Century Circle North, Springdale, OH 45246.
