ABC News to air from Devou Park

Mixed media

By Jim Knippenberg
Enquirer staff writer

ABC World News Tonight with Peter Jennings at the anchor desk will broadcast live from Covington's Devou Park Oct. 19.

An ABC producer was in town Wednesday scouting four or five locations, says WCPO-TV general manager Bill Fee, and settled on Devou because of its view of the Cincinnati skyline.

Jennings is spending the week of Oct. 18 visiting four cities considered pivotal in the presidential election. He'll localize the broadcast with a story on how this area fits into the picture. He will also broadcast from Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Kansas City.

CET celebrates

Here's what most people don't know: WCET-TV, now just plain old CET, was the first licensed public television station in the country. That was 50 years ago.

Programming was rough, choices were limited and only about 500 TV sets in the area could receive the signal. There was no Big Bird (the first program was the 30-minute Tel-A-Story), no Masterpiece Theater and, well, no money in the budget, which is why the station's first studio was a converted closet - honest - at Music Hall.

But times have changed and today the station is regarded as one of the country's tops, something people are talking about a lot as Channel 48 whips up a bunch of celebratory events for its anniversary year. The first two:

• CET Trivia Contest: The 10-question pop quiz is available at www.cetconnect.org and it's not that hard. We've already given away one answer in paragraph No. 2. Winners get a CET prize package.

• Share your memories: No prizes, but the station is asking people to send in fond memories of programs they've watched, events they've attended, Action Auctions they've worked; also available on the Web site.

Operation Sunshine

On Sept. 9, WKRQ-FM, WUBE-FM, WGRR-FM and WAQZ-FM started collecting donations - bottled water, batteries, lumber, food, pet food - for victims of Hurricane Francis. The effort was dubbed "Operation Sunshine."

As they were loading the 18-wheeler, Ivan hit. So they got another truck and started filling it as well. The first truck arrived in West Palm Beach Thursday. Its cargo included 15 pallets of dog and cat food for a West Palm animal shelter that's holding close to 800 pets that were separated from owners.

The second truck arrives this week in Century, Fla., north of Pensacola, with the same payload.

'Price' news

Lisa Taylor of Georgetown turns up this week on The Price is Right (11 a.m. Thursday, Channel 12).

Network policy is to not release results early so there's no word on how Taylor did or what kind of loot she'll be dragging home.

MU grad makes good

Miami University grad (1979) Michael Klawitter, now a successful film producer, returns to campus Thursday to talk about "Getting There: From Oxford to Hollywood in 100 Easy Steps."

Among the films he has worked on as a producer, co-producer, production exec or post-production supervisor are Scarface, Sweet Liberty, Betsy's Wedding, Sea of Love, Bone Collector, One Tough Cop and many more.

Catch him at 7 p.m. Thursday in 46 Culler Hall at Miami for the free event.
