Van fleeing police crashes, injuring nine
Public safety notes
The Enquirer
OVER-THE-RHINE - Nine people were injured, none seriously, when a van fleeing police crashed into another vehicle at 12th Street and Central Parkway on Sunday.
The crash, which occurred in congested traffic leaving the Bengals game, prompted police to close Central Parkway from Elm Street to Ezzard Charles Drive for four hours.
The incident began at Fifth and Elm streets when the driver of the van, McKinley Douglas, 27, of Vine Vista Place, Avondale, fired shots above the head of a crowd, Sgt. John Wainscott said.
Officers spotted the van and began a pursuit before the van crashed, Wainscott said. The van ran a red light and struck a car that was northbound on Central Parkway. Seven people were inside the vehicle, including an unrestrained 2-year-old.
The van rolled onto its side, and the other car - with two people inside - went across the median and hit a tree. All nine people in the two vehicles were taken to the hospital. All but two, including the 2-year-old, were treated and released.
Douglas was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and with a drug charge after crack cocaine was discovered in his possession, Wainscott said. Additional traffic charges are pending, he said.
