MIDDLETOWN - The South American nation of Chile takes center stage in Middletown this weekend.
"The land of contrast" will be the theme of Middfest International's 22nd annual cultural festival Friday through Sunday.
Middfest visitors will see displays featuring Chilean folk art and fine art, weavers, photography, posters and literature. Entertainers will include the Chilean music and dance group Ballet Folk Lorico Antumapu and musician Pauld Monsalave. In keeping with Middfest custom, performers from other nations will also be on hand, including of African, Arabic, Turkish, Brazilian, Indian and Polish cultures.
Renowned Chilean chef Luis Layare will offer cooking demonstrations throughout the weekend. Visitors can sample authentic Chilean food and drink at the Food Court, Wine Garden and World Bazaar.
In an effort to extend its educational outreach, Middfest is hosting Super Saturday for kids from 10 a.m. to noon. Young people can interact with performers, puppeteers and storytellers and learn about Chile.
"Thanks to sponsorship by Target, scout troops will receive free admission during that time and will be the focus of educational performances and presentations at Youth Park," said Middfest manager Jewel Bell.
Youth Park is the setting for Middfest's Castaway Theme. This children's area will feature a tribute to Chile's many islands, with giant stone sculptures, Isle Robinson Crusoe and Easter Island. Volunteers will offer crafts, storyboards and games.
American superhero Spider-Man will meet Condorito, a character representing the official bird of Chile, the condor.
First held in 1978, Middfest celebrates international arts, history, culture, sports and food with an emphasis on a different nation or region each year. More than 19 countries have been featured, and people from the spotlight country are invited to participate and represent their culture. The celebration attracts regional audiences.
