Man dies while driving ATV illegally on road

The Enquirer

BETHEL - A 36-year-old man died in this Clermont County community Thursday night after the four-wheel Yamaha ATV he was illegally driving slid off the road and struck a utility pole.

Raymond "Doug" Herget of Bethel was unable to make it through a curve on Kinnett Road about 9:30 p.m., according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

He was less than a mile from his home. The ATV he was riding is not intended or legal for roadway use, the patrol said.

Three homes evacuated after gas main break

ANDERSON TWP. - A gas main break temporarily evacuated four residents from three homes and closed a road Friday, fire officials said.

No injuries were reported, and the residents were moved to a church.

The gas leak occurred about 10:37 a.m. in the 7100 block of Dunn Road when a worker with Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati dug into a Cinergy gas line with a backhoe, Anderson Township Fire Chief Mark Ober said.

The gas was turned off at 11:40 a.m. and repairs were completed by 1 p.m., a Cinergy spokeswoman said.

Six juveniles charged with break-ins

MIAMI TWP. - Police charged six juveniles from the Loveland area Friday who confessed to breaking and entering into the Oasis Golf and Conference Center.

The boys are cooperating with police and have turned over stolen property hidden in their rooms, investigators said.

President celebrates year

It's a weekend of anniversaries at the University of Cincinnati. A year ago Friday, Nancy Zimpher became the University of Cincinnati's first female president, overseeing its ongoing massive changes in look and substance. The college is transitioning from a commuter school to a more traditional, residential school. It opened several buildings designed to improve student life on campus, including the expanded Tangeman University Center, the Joseph A. Steger Student Life Center and a new baseball stadium. This weekend, UC's College of Engineering's aerospace program celebrates being the second-oldest aeronautical/aerospace engineering program in the nation - and the only program to be chaired by a woman. Events celebrating its 75th anniversary began on Friday and continue today.

Play site named after coach

A group of West side residents and two organizations, St. Teresa Football and St. William Football, are dedicating Carson-Covedale Playfield in Price Hill - between Covedale and Overlook avenues across from St. Joseph's Cemetery - 11:30 a.m. today in honor of longtime coach and referee Jerry McClatchey. McClatchey died of a heart attack Aug. 9 at age 58. He coached football at St. Teresa of Avila in Price Hill for almost 20 years and was also a basketball referee.

TRAFFIC WATCH

West Chester Road in West Chester Township will close Monday east of Debbie Drive and west of John Cox Road for a sanitary sewer installation. It is scheduled to reopen Friday.
