Roundup of Saturday's other Top 25 games

By The Associated Press

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Jason Campbell threw for 252 yards and two touchdowns, and Auburn stamped itself as a national title contender.

Carnell Williams and Ronnie Brown each ran for a touchdown to complement Campbell, and the Tigers' swarming defense made Tennessee's two freshmen quarterbacks look like neophytes for the first time this season. Junior Rosegreen had four interceptions to set a record for Auburn (5-0, 3-0 Southeastern Conference) and tie the SEC mark.

Erik Ainge got his first start for the Volunteers (3-1, 1-1) after racking up the best passer rating in the SEC over the first three games. The promotion did no good. He threw four interceptions and lost a fumble. Fellow freshman Brent Schaeffer had little success in his first game as a reliever. He also threw an interception.

Campbell has often received the blame from fans and media for Auburn's past offensive inconsistency, despite playing for four offensive coordinators in four seasons. He is finally flourishing in Al Borges' West Coast offense.

Against the Vols, he looked off receivers and stepped up in the pocket. He threw with fine touch over defenders and zipped passes in between them. Campbell was 12-for-15 in the first half for 240 yards to lead the Tigers to a 31-3 lead.

No. 2 Oklahoma 28, Texas Tech 13

NORMAN, Okla. - Jason White threw three touchdown passes to break Oklahoma's career mark and Adrian Peterson added 146 rushing yards and a touchdown run.

White broke Josh Heupel's record in the third quarter with his 54th career touchdown pass. Fullback J.D. Runnels caught White's pass in the right flat and took it into the end zone to put Oklahoma (4-0, 1-0 Big 12) ahead 21-6. Travis Wilson caught his second touchdown pass of the game in the fourth quarter to make it 28-6.

White appeared a little late on several passes in the first half when he had only 55 yards passing, but was on the mark when he needed to after halftime. He finished with 151 yards - his fewest of the season - on 15-for-24 passing.

Texas Tech dropped to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the Big 12.

No. 3 Georgia 45, No. 13 LSU 16

ATHENS, Ga. - David Greene set a school record by throwing five touchdown passes and Georgia got a huge victory in the Southeastern Conference.

It was a totally unexpected performance by Georgia (4-0, 2-0 SEC), which has never been an offensive juggernaut during Mark Richt's four years as coach. The Tigers (3-2, 1-2) had not given up this many points since a 56-13 loss to Florida in 1996.

Greene completed only 10 of 19 passes for 172 yards, but half his completions went for TDs. He tied Johnny Rauch as the winningest quarterback in Georgia history with his 36th victory as a starter. Reggie Brown had two TD catches and set a career high with 110 yards receiving. Fred Gibson also hauled in a pair of scoring passes.

No. 4 Miami 27, Georgia Tech 3

ATLANTA - Brock Berlin threw three touchdown passes, and Frank Gore ran for 115 yards in Miami's first Atlantic Coast Conference road game.

Playing without the injured P.J. Daniels, the ACC's leading rusher, Georgia Tech (2-2, 1-2) was shut down by Miami's tough defense, which forced four turnovers. Miami (4-0, 2-0) has allowed only one offensive touchdown in four games.

Berlin completed 10 of 20 passes for 200 yards with no interceptions.

No. 5 Texas 44, Baylor 14

AUSTIN, Texas - Cedric Benson ran for 188 yards and three touchdowns, and Vince Young passed for two scores for Texas.

Benson passed Earl Campbell for second place on the school career rushing list, and Young threw his first scoring passes to a wide receiver, both going to Tony Jeffery in the first half.

While rain and an early start kept many fans away from Royal-Memorial Stadium, the Longhorns (4-0, 1-0 Big 12) made quick work of the Bears (2-2, 0-1) in their final tuneup before next Saturday's matchup with No. 2 Oklahoma in Dallas.

Virginia Tech 19, No. 6 West Virginia 13

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Brandon Pace kicked four field goals to atone for a late miss last week, and Virginia Tech played superb defense to beat West Virginia.

Vincent Fuller intercepted Rasheed Marshall's pass with 18 seconds left to seal the victory for Virginia Tech (3-2).

Pace made field goals of 29, 30, 35 and a career-long 46 yards, making up for a 43-yard miss as time expired in a 17-16 loss to N.C. State a week ago.

The Mountaineers dropped to 4-1.

No. 9 Florida St. 38, North Carolina 16

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Wyatt Sexton threw three touchdown passes in his starting debut, and Leon Washington ran for 153 yards and a touchdown for Florida State.

Florida State (3-1, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) built a 24-6 lead early in the third quarter, but didn't put the game out of reach until Sexton's 15-yard TD pass to Chauncey Stovall completed the scoring with 6:53 left.

North Carolina (2-3, 1-2 ACC) managed 363 yards against Florida State's tough defense, but had difficulty reaching the end zone.

No. 10 California 49, Oregon St. 7

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Chase Lyman had five catches for a career-high 176 yards and three touchdowns, and Aaron Rodgers completed 12 of 16 passes for 140 yards and three scores for California (3-0, 1-0 Pac-10).

Cal had not played for 20 days. A game against Southern Mississippi, originally scheduled for Sept. 16, was postponed by Hurricane Ivan.

The Beavers dropped to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the Pac-10.

No. 16 Florida 45, Arkansas 30

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Chris Leak threw for a career-high 322 yards and three touchdowns, and Florida (3-1, 2-1 SEC) held off another late rally.

The Gators extended their winning streak against the Razorbacks (3-2, 1-1) to five games - every matchup since Arkansas joined the Southeastern Conference in 1992.

Florida led 38-7 late in the third quarter before the Razorbacks scored 23 consecutive points. Quarterback Matt Jones, who leads the conference in total offense, hurt the Gators running and passing.

Louisiana Tech 28, No. 17 Fresno St. 21

RUSTON, La. - Ryan Moats scored his fourth touchdown with less than 3:20 left and finished with in 236 yards rushing for Louisiana Tech (3-2, 2-0 Western Athletic).

Moats, who entered as the nation's fifth-leading rusher, scored from 8 yards, helping Tech beat a ranked team for the second time in school history.

Fresno State (3-1, 0-1) led 21-20 with four minutes left and was trying to run out the clock. But Byron Santiago intercepted Paul Pinegar's pass and returned it to the 16. Moats scored two plays later, and Matt Kubik hit Eric Newman for the 2-point conversion.

No. 18 Minnesota 16, Penn St. 7

MINNEAPOLIS - Laurence Maroney ran for 144 yards and a touchdown and No. 18 Minnesota overcame Penn State's scrappy defense.

The Gophers (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) recorded their second straight 5-0 start since 1940-41 and have won four in a row against Penn State. But Minnesota's offense, which entered the game averaging 44 points, stalled frequently against the Lions (2-3, 0-2).

While Maroney set a school record with his sixth consecutive 100-yard rushing game, the Lions helped limit Minnesota's powerful backfield by holding Marion Barber III to 88 yards on 21 carries and one score. Bryan Cupito went 8-for-18 for 113 yards and an interception for the Gophers.

No. 19 Michigan 35, Indiana 14

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Chad Henne threw for 316 yards and three touchdowns, and Leon Hart returned a punt 76 yards for a score for Michigan.

The Wolverines (4-1, 2-0) retained a share of the Big Ten lead by winning their third straight game and their 13th in a row against the Hoosiers since 1987.

Indiana (2-3, 0-2) lost its third straight game this year and is 1-14 against the Wolverines at Memorial Stadium.

No. 20 Wisconsin 24, Illinois 7

MADISON, Wis. - Anthony Davis ran for 213 yards and three touchdowns in his first action in a month and Wisconsin (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) held its fifth straight opponent to a touchdown or less, a feat it last achieved in 1951.

Davis, who sat out the last 31/2 games with an orbital fracture in his right eye, had scoring runs of 31, 16 and 7 yards and set up Mike Allen's 48-yard field goal with a 27-yard run. Illinois dropped to 2-3 and 0-2 in the Big Ten.

No. 22 Louisville 59, East Carolina 7

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Eric Shelton tied a Louisville record with five rushing touchdowns and finished with 129 yards for Louisville.

Louisville (4-0, 2-0 Conference USA) piled up 549 yards overall on the nation's second-worst defense and reached 40 points for the seventh time in 17 games under second-year coach Bobby Petrino.

The Cardinals forced five turnovers and converted three into touchdowns in their last tuneup before an Oct. 14 date with fourth-ranked Miami. The Pirates (0-4, 0-1) have lost nine straight games and 17 of their last 18.

No. 23 Boise St. 38, SMU 20

BOISE, Idaho - Jared Zabransky threw for 190 yards and two touchdowns to help Boise State extend the longest winning streak in the nation to 16 games.

Zabransky completed 20 of 31 passes before leaving after three quarters and the Broncos (5-0, 2-0 Western Athletic) won at home for the 22nd straight time. Chris Foster had six catches for 125 yards for SMU (1-4, 1-1).

No. 25 Oklahoma St. 36, Iowa St. 7

STILLWATER, Okla. - Vernand Morency ran for 143 yards and two touchdowns and Jason Ricks kicked three field goals for Oklahoma State.

Jamie Thompson caused two fumbles and recovered another for Oklahoma State (4-0, 1-0 Big 12). The Cowboys, who led 23-0 at halftime, held the Cyclones (2-2, 0-1) to just 59 yards rushing on 37 carries.
