Mount St. Joe stuns Hanover

Small colleges: Dayton, TMC record victories

Enquirer news services

HANOVER, Ind. - The undefeated Mount St. Joseph Lions defeated Hanover College 29-10 Saturday afternoon in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference game.

The victory was the first for the Lions over the Panthers.

MSU trails 1-12 in the series with Hanover dating to 1990.

Mount St. Joseph (4-0, 1-0) outgained Hanover 450-220.

Hanover (1-4, 0-1) was picked first in the HCAC preseason poll. MSJ was picked second.

The Lions' Bryan Hamrock was 18-of-23 passing for 188 yards and two touchdowns. Hamrock also ran for another score.

Andy Wellendorf (Elder) caught five passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns.

Mike Lovell rushed 21 times for 174 yards and one touchdown for Mount St. Joseph.

Dayton 45, Davidson 27

DAYTON - The Dayton Flyers scored a pair of touchdowns just a minute and 22 seconds apart late in the first quarter to gain control of the game at Welcome Stadium.

Senior safety Doug Jones scored a special-teams touchdown, blocked a PAT and led the Dayton defense with eight hits on the day.

UD, No. 1 in the Sports Network and Football Gazette Division I-AA mid-major rankings, improved to 4-1.

Davidson fell to 1-3.

The Flyers will be at defending Pioneer Football League champion Valparaiso Saturday.

Thomas More 37, Huntingdon 36 (OT)

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Needing just an extra point to send the game to a second overtime, Thomas More pulled out a little trickery to win its second game of the season.

After receiver Adam Morancey hauled in an 18-yard pass from Bellevue graduate Nate Berkley in overtime to pull the Saints to within one, coach Mike Hallett elected to go for the two-point conversion.

On the conversion attempt, fullback Nick Partin (Newport) connected with Berkley for the winning points.

After a bye week, TMC (2-3) will travel to Kentucky Wesleyan Oct. 16 for a noon kickoff.

Wilmington 26, Heidelberg 14

WILMINGTON, Ohio - Jermaine Isaac ran for two touchdowns, Deon Short returned a kickoff 89 yards for a score and Chad Otte had an 89-yard interception return in Wilmington's victory over winless Heidelberg (0-4, 0-3).

Isaac gained 62 yards on 20 rushes, scoring on runs of 8 and 10 yards for the Quakers (2-2, 2-1 Ohio Conference).

Mount Union 49, Capital 7

COLUMBUS - Zac Bruney ran for two touchdowns and passed for another as Mount Union extended streaks to 98 regular-season and 88 Ohio Conference victories.

Capital (3-1, 2-1 OAC) was ranked No. 4 in Division III.
