Funny Cide gets up in Jockey Club Gold Cup
Funny Cide stormed back into the lead down the stretch and pulled away for a sweet victory in the rain in the $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup Saturday at Belmont Park.
Just like that, the 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner had that elusive victory over the same wet track where he suffered his biggest defeat - a loss in the Belmont Stakes that ended his bid for the Triple Crown.
With Jose Santos back aboard Funny Cide, the 4-year-old gelding ran an unusual race. The New York-bred took the lead early, dropped back near the far turn and looked to be out of contention just before the field turned for home.
Santos put Funny Cide into a drive and the horse fought his way past Newfoundland in the stretch.
Funny Cide, second to Evening Attire in the Saratoga Breeders' Cup in his last start, had won just two of eight races this year. Trainer Barclay Tagg said his horse needed an impressive win to earn a trip to the Breeders' Cup Classic.
Mission accomplished. Tagg, all smiles for the first time in months, said a trip to Texas for another try at the BC Classic on Oct. 30 is next.
Funny Cide ran ninth in the 2003 Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita.
In other Grade 1 races on the program: Pico Central was sensational in taking the Vosburgh Stakes; Kitten's Joy won the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic, and Riskaverse took the Flower Bowl Invitational.
But Funny Cide stole the show, covering 1 1/4 miles in 2:02.44 and beating Newfoundland by three-quarters of a length.
At Stickney, Ill., Freefourinternet rallied to defeat Perfect Drift by 1 3/4 lengths in the $750,000 Hawthorne Gold Cup
TURFWAY PARK: California trainer Jerry Hollendorfer knew something the bettors missed: Cappuchino likes Kentucky.
Belying his 31-to-1 odds, the 5-year-old broke first and was never seriously threatened in winning the $100,000 Grade III Turfway Park Fall Championship. Cappuchino set quick fractions of :22.87, :46.38, and 1:11.18 on his way to a 4-length victory.
Tennis
THAILAND OPEN: Roger Federer and Andy Roddick pulled out three-set victories to set up a No. 1 vs. No. 2 final at Bangkok. Top-ranked Federer got past Thai star Paradorn Srichaphan 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 in the first semifinal, while Roddick outlasted Marat Safin 7-6 (1), 6-7 (0), 7-6 (2) in a matchup between past U.S. Open champions.
There were zero breaks of serve in the Roddick-Safin semifinal, and each player faced only a single break point. Both pounded 18 aces and put in nearly 60 percent of their first serves.
KOREA OPEN: Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova routed Anne Kremer 6-0, 6-2 to advance to the final at Seoul. The top-seeded Sharapova will play for the title against Marta Domachowska, who defeated Abigail Spears 7-6 (5), 6-1.
CLIJSTERS QUITS: Former No. 1 Kim Clijsters' comeback from left wrist surgery stalled when she quit in pain while losing to Elena Bovina in the Gaz de France Stars semifinals at Hasselt, Belgium. The third-seeded Bovina will meet top-seeded Elena Dementieva in an all-Russian final today. Boxing
TRINIDAD-MAYORGA: Travis Simms easily defended his WBA super welterweight belt with a unanimous decision over Bronco McKart.
On the undercard of the Felix Trinidad-Ricardo Mayorga middleweight fight at Madison Square Garden, Simms dominated, although he was hardly sharp.
He didn't live up to his nickname of "Tremendous," but he was good enough for the unorthodox McKart in a battle of left-handers.
The closest card of the three judges was 116-112. The others were 117-111 and 118-110.
