Choreographer's cultural inspiration
When you see Chasing Squirrel, keep your eyes (and ears) open for iconic images of the '70s Latin culture that inspired Trey McIntyre, including:
The chairs on the stage: They're meant to indicate traditional men's "places" - including a boxing ring, a poker game, a strip club.
Chavo del Ocho: Most of us don't know it, but the Kronos Quartet's score references the theme of a popular Mexican soap opera that features a bumbling superhero who dresses as a red bug.
Cha-cha: The famed Latin step is there, highly stylized. So are the merengue, salsa and tango.
Zoot suits: Oversized jackets with big lapels, padded shoulders and baggy, cuffed pants hit Harlem big in the early '40s, quickly disappeared but were revived three decades later by young Latino men.
Big hair: We mean really big hair. Each ballerina will use almost three cans of hairspray to get her hair into the spirit of the dance.
