Federer continues mastery of Roddick

Enquirer staff and wire reports

Top-ranked Roger Federer routed an injured Andy Roddick 6-4, 6-0 Sunday to capture the Thailand Open at Bangkok, joining John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg as the only players to win 12 straight ATP Tour finals in the last 25 years. Federer has won 10 titles this year. Federer needed just 58 minutes to defeat the second-seeded Roddick.

KOREA OPEN: Wimbledon champ Maria Sharapova overwhelmed first-time finalist Marta Domachowska 6-1, 6-1 to win the event in Seoul.

Sharapova needed 56 minutes to capture the fifth singles title of her career and third this year. The top-seeded Russian lost just 15 games during the tournament.

She became the fifth woman this year to win three or more titles, joining Lindsay Davenport (six), Justine Henin-Hardenne (five) and Svetlana Kuznetsova and Amelie Mauresmo (three).

GAZ DE FRANCE STARS: Top-seeded Elena Dementieva won the last five games and beat Elena Bovina 0-6, 6-0, 6-4 at Hasselt, Belgium in the WTA Tour's latest all-Russian final. It's Dementieva's first title of 2004.

IRL: Adrian Fernandez won a two-lap sprint to the finish in the Toyota 400 at Fontana, Calif., nosing out Tony Kanaan, whose runner-up finish was good enough to clinch the Indy Racing League series point title.

Fernandez outdueled Kanaan over the final two trips around the two-mile oval after a restart following a caution flag. The victory was his third of the year, and third in the last five IRL events.

OSTERTAG INJURED: Kings center Greg Ostertag will be out 4-6 weeks after breaking his right hand after a fall at his home. He signed with the Sacramento in July after nine seasons with the Utah Jazz. He is to be the backup to All-Star center Brad Miller.

Island Fashion battled down the stretch with Elloluv and Miss Loren to win the $250,000 Lady's Secret Breeders' Cup Handicap for fillies and mares.

BAGO WINS ARC: Seemingly beaten turning for home, Bago made a surging stretch run to win the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

RETIRED: Blue Grass Stakes winner The Cliff's Edge was retired from racing after breaking a right front ankle during his third-place finish in the Jockey Club Gold Cup.

Colleges

MIAMI HOCKEY: The RedHawks, ranked 15th in one Division I preseason poll, defeated the University of Windsor 4-1 in an exhibition game at Goggin Arena.
