When the Emperor Was Divine by Julie Otsuka (Anchor; $9.95). Otsuka's debut novel is the story of what happens to a Japanese-American family before and after their internment for more than three years in an enemy alien camp in Utah during World War II. Jazzwomen: Conversations with Twenty-One Musicians by Wayne Enstice and Janis Stockhouse (Indiana University Press; $39.95; includes CD). Booklist magazine said that the co-authors "bat close to a thousand" in their question-and-answer interviews with performers from pianist Marilyn Crispell to singer-pianist Diana Krall. Toot & Puddle: The New Friend (Little Brown; $16.99) by Holly Hobbie. Toot and Puddle reign as the most adorable pair of pigs in kid lit. In their eighth outing, the winsome duo deals with jealousy when Puddle's cousin Opal brings her glamorous new friend Daphne to visit their home in Woodcock Pocket. Contemporary American Doll Artists and Their Dolls by Kathryn Witt (Collector Books; $29.95). The Northern Kentucky author profiles 25 doll artists, including a few from our region. She covers all aspects of dollmaking, from materials to the stories behind the dolls. The Beringer-Crawford Museum is hosting, "A Doll Affair," during which Witt will sign her book and the museum will showcase its antique dolls.
