Alan Horton, senior vice president of newspapers at E.W. Scripps Co., will retire at the end of the year.
Horton, 61, has been a senior vice president at Scripps since 1994. He joined the company as a reporter for The Cincinnati Post in 1965.
Since then, he has worked as a Washington, D.C., correspondent, an editor and a publisher before moving to the corporate offices in Cincinnati.
"It's time for someone to take a fresh look at how our newspapers do their thing," Horton said in a release of his decision to step down.
Rich Boehne, executive vice president at Scripps, will take over day-to-day management of the newspaper division. He also will continue to oversee the company's daily operations and spearhead strategic initiatives.
