OWENSBORO - A former Daviess County Sheriff's Department deputy will serve three years in prison after he was convicted of abusing two teenage girls earlier this year.
Michael Lonzo Chilton, 55, of Owensboro, was convicted Aug. 2 of three misdemeanor counts of third-degree sexual abuse and one felony count of third-degree sodomy. He was sentenced to three years in prison on Monday.
The former school resource officer at Apollo High School was convicted of sexually abusing the two girls - 15 and 17 years old at the time - in separate incidents at his home in 2002. The two girls attended Apollo.
Daviess Circuit Judge Tom Castlen denied a request by Chilton for probation in lieu of a jail sentence.
"I know you were a role model for a lot of people. ...They loved you, you know that," Castlen told Chilton. "Only you exploited that trust."
Upon his release from prison, Chilton will also be required to register with the state's sex offender registry. Lifetime registration is required for anyone convicted of two or more criminal offenses against a minor, according to state law.
