Wayne's daughter, Melinda Wayne-Munoz, is scheduled to attend the ceremony on Saturday. The 37-cent stamp is the latest in the Legends of Hollywood series.

"John Wayne played so many memorable characters over the years," said Des Moines postal official Doug Morrow. "Courage, justice and rugged individualism; these are the iconic American traits that John Wayne brought to his roles and his life, which began right here in Winterset nearly 100 years ago."

Wayne, born in Winterset in 1907, won an Oscar in 1970 for True Grit. He died in 1979.

The John Wayne stamp, painted by Drew Struzan, is based on a black-and-white publicity still taken for the 1962 film The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
