Shelf life:

The week's big signings

The Great Tree of Avalon by T.A. Barron (Philomel; $19.99). Barron follows his masterful Lost Years of Merlin epic (which Shelf raved about in earlier reviews) with a fantasy for young readers about the mythical tree planted by Merlin that houses an entire world now in danger. 10:30 a.m. today, Books & Co., Town and Country Shopping Center, 350 E. Stroop Road, Kettering, (937) 298-6540; 5 p.m. today, Blue Manatee, 3054 Madison Road, Oakley, (513) 731-2665.

Wild About Books by Judy Sierra, illustrated by Marc Brown (Random House; $16.95). If you can sprint north for this, your children will adore you almost as much as they do Brown. He's the author/illustrator of the best-selling Arthur books turned PBS series, and this is his first tour in a decade. This whimsical picture book is about a librarian who drives her bookmobile into the zoo, where she introduces the animals to reading. 7 p.m. today, Books & Co., Town and Country Shopping Center, 350 E. Stroop Road, Kettering; (937) 298-6540.

The Cincinnati Arch by John Tallmadge (University of Georgia Press; $16.95). A move from rural Minnesota to Cincinnati prompted the Union Institute and University of Cincinnati professor to rethink not only his view of the city but also of nature. The title refers to a term geologists use to describe a fold in the Earth's crust in this region. 7 p.m. Thursday, Joseph-Beth Booksellers, Rookwood Pavilion, Madison and Edwards roads, Norwood, (513) 396-8960.

Jungle Drums (Abrams; $18.95)and Truckdogs (Amulet; $16.95) by Graeme Base. The renowned Australian children's author and illustrator is back with a picture book about a warthog teased by other jungle animals and a novel about a world inhabited by creatures who are a cross between trucks and dogs. 4 p.m. Saturday, Joseph-Beth Booksellers, Rookwood Pavilion, Madison and Edwards roads, Norwood, (513) 396-8960; 3 p.m. Monday, Blue Marble, 1356 S. Fort Thomas Ave., Fort Thomas, (859) 781-0602; 7 p.m. Monday, Books & Co., Town and Country Shopping Center, 350 E. Stroop Road, Kettering (937) 298-6540.

The Coal Tattoo by Silas House (Algonquin; $22.95). The Kentucky author sets his novel about two sisters - one religious and the other wild - in a hardscrabble Kentucky mining town. Booklist says the book is "starkly beautiful, overtly literary." 2 p.m. Sunday, Books & Co., Town and Country Shopping Center, 350 E. Stroop Road, Kettering, (937) 298-6540; and 7 p.m. Monday, Joseph-Beth Booksellers, Rookwood Pavilion, Madison and Edwards roads, Norwood; (513) 396-8960.
