Paavo Jarvi, music director of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, created a "seismic jolt" in Chicago, where he made his debut conducting the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in three performances Thursday through Saturday.
"Not many conductors can front the mighty (Chicago Symphony) for the first time and elicit the deeply communicative music-making Jarvi did," wrote music critic John von Rhein in the Chicago Tribune. He adds that Jarvi "can be considered a plausible contender for Daniel Barenboim's job here in 2006."
Barenboim announced last season that he would leave his Chicago Symphony conducting post at the end of his contract.
Jarvi's Cincinnati Symphony contract goes through the 2008-09 season.
