The National Television Academy has nominated WKRC-TV (Channel 12) for a 2003-04 National Emmy Award for Finding Family, a television documentary that chronicled the reunion of Hyde Park resident and Holocaust survivor Henry Blumenstein with the Dutch family that saved his life.
The academy will announce the winner of the Community Service Emmy at a luncheon on Oct. 21 at Rockefeller Center in New York.
The film, which aired on Channel 12 in April 2003, was produced in partnership with the Center for Holocaust and Humanity Education at Cincinnati's Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. Reporter Jeff Hirsh and photographer Jeff Barnhill accompanied Blumenstein as he retraced his youth, hidden as a child in the Dutch underground by a Catholic farm couple, Johannes and Sjoukje Dijkstra and their eight children. The TV crew also accompanied him to Auschwitz death camp in Poland, where his mother was murdered.
"It was just very moving to be there when Henry went back to talk to the descendants, and he told them the story of their family's heroism," says Hirsh. "The ultimate aspect was the bond that stretched across generations and across the ocean."
Finding Family has won several other regional and national awards. Dr. Racelle Weiman, director of the Center for Holocaust and Humanity, has created a study guide, and a DVD is available (221-1875, Ext. 3355).
