FRANKFORT - Kentucky has a record number of people registered to vote in the upcoming general election, according to figures released Thursday by Secretary of State Trey Grayson and the state Board of Elections.
There were 2.79 million people on Kentucky's voter rolls for the Nov. 2 election, Grayson said.
That's an increase of 87,693 voters from those registered for the May primary election.
The total included 45,408 Republicans, 34,825 Democrats and 7,460 others.
It was an increase of just over 3 percent, Grayson said.
Voter registration increased by a little over 2 percent before the 2000 presidential election.
"We are very excited to have so many new Kentucky voters for the upcoming election," Grayson said. "It is my hope that this large increase in registrations will result in a large turnout on Election Day."
