New annex named in honor of St. Peter Claver's founder



OVER-THE-RHINE - St. Peter Claver School held an open house Wednesday in honor of its founder, the Rev. Al Lauer, and blessed the Father Lauer Annex across the street on East 13th Street.

The addition includes an office, computer laboratory and classroom. It will be used by students in first and second grades.

The school, founded in 2001 by Lauer, formerly pastor of Old St. Mary's Church, has 26 students. Lauer died in October 2002.

Montessori education is speaker's topic

NORTH AVONDALE - The president of the American Montessori Society board of directors, Martha Torrence, will speak about Montessori education from 7-8:30 p.m. Oct. 20 at the New School, 3 Burton Woods Lane.

The talk is free and open to the public. Reservations are recommended. Call (513) 281-7999.

Latin offered for children in grades 4-8

PRICE HILL - Students in grades 4-8 can take an introductory Latin course at Seton High School.

The course runs for six consecutive Saturdays from 9:30-11:30 a.m. starting Saturday. Classes will be held at Seton, 3901 Glenway Ave.

There is a $25 registration fee, which can be paid at the first class.

Dinner and auction at Elder High

PRICE HILL - Elder High School will host Elderama 2004 "Back Home at the Pit," a dinner-auction, at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the school, 3900 Vincent Ave.

There are nearly 900 items in silent and oral auctions that benefit scholarships.

Guests can also contribute to the Elder Family Crisis Fund, established in 2001 to help students' families in times of need.

Summit Country Day has dedication today

HYDE PARK - Summit Country Day School will dedicate its new Lower School building with an all-school ceremony at 1:30 p.m. today.

The dedication will be held outside with WKRC Channel 12's Cammy Dierking as emcee.

Representatives from each grade level, faculty, staff, parents and alumni will place an item in a time capsule, which will be sealed in an interior wall.

The Lower School houses students in prekindergarten through fourth grade.

Golden Grads day at St. Ursula

EAST WALNUT HILLS - St. Ursula Academy will honor its Golden Grads, alumnae who graduated 50 or more years ago, on Thursday.

Alumnae are invited to celebrate with Mass beginning at 11 a.m., followed by lunch.

New members will be inducted into the Golden Grads Club with a pin signifying their membership.

Students will try to emulate homeless

ST. BERNARD - More than 70 Roger Bacon High School students will participate in the school's fifth Shantytown today.

Students will set up boxes on the front apron of the high school, 4320 Vine St., at 6 p.m. and then listen to guest speakers from the Drop Inn Center, and performances by the Queen City Sound and the Bucket Boys.

They will then participate in a "soup kitchen" dinner, a candlelight vigil, and morning prayer service.

Roger Bacon Community Outreach hosts the event to raise awareness about the local homeless community.
