Do you believe in Hollywood?
Sportscaster Al Michaels got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Wednesday to honor his work announcing everything from the Olympics to Monday Night Football. "I used to cruise Hollywood Boulevard when I was a kid, taking a chance on being arrested, and now I am being laid to rest!" Michaels (above) joked at the unveiling ceremony. Michaels has served as the play-by-play announcer for Monday Night Football for 18 years. He also has logged hundreds of hours covering professional basketball, baseball, hockey and horse racing. Michaels was in the Reds' radio booth from 1971-73.
Highlands alumni making impact
Two players from the region are making key contributions on two of the nation's best teams. Highlands produced Brent Grover, a junior defensive tackle for No. 5 Purdue, and sophomore offensive lineman Rob Smith of Tennessee, which controls its destiny in the Southeastern Conference East race. Grover, a three-year starter, might be best known for his out-of-control mane. He hasn't cut his hair since January and is wearing an extra-large helmet this year to cover his locks. Smith was named SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week for his performance against Georgia. He recorded 17 knockdowns in the 19-14 victory, helping keep his quarterbacks out of Georgia's grasp for all but one play.
Davenport regains No. 1 ranking
American Lindsay Davenport regained the No. 1 ranking for the first time since early 2002 by defeating Dinara Safina of Russia 6-4, 6-2 in the second round of the Kremlin Cup on Thursday. Davenport officially will overtake France's Amelie Mauresmo next week to move atop the WTA rankings for the fifth time. "I'm amazed that I was able to get back to No. 1 after a tough couple of years," said Davenport, who has struggled with injuries since last being at the top Jan. 13, 2002.
A night of Nux and pucks
Reds legend and broadcaster Joe Nuxhall will drop the ceremonial first puck when the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks play their home opener Oct. 23 against Rochester at 7:35 p.m. at Cincinnati Gardens. Tickets are available at the Gardens or through Ticketmaster.
