Two teams from Springboro High School made a killing in Ohio's Stock Market Game through Mercury Air Group's recent spike in stock price.
Springboro's Traf Dawg team - consisting of seniors Matt Marcus and Matt Clouse - bought 11,000 shares of Mercury Air (MAX) Oct. 4 at $5.20 per share, then sold it later at $8.65.
The team's portfolio was worth a mock $137,364 Thursday at the end of the second week of the game - by far the highest regionally in all age categories.
On Oct. 6, Mercury Air - which provides services to the aviation industry - announced a special cash dividend of $17.5 million, or about $5.45 per share, payable in November.
Springboro fields 44 teams in the game, which gives players a mock $100,000 to invest over 10 weeks. A second Springboro team, Comeback Kids, also capitalized on Mercury Air's run-up and has a portfolio worth $117,692.
"I don't think (Marcus and Clouse) really had any idea'' that stock would jump, said Springboro teacher Rick Creager.
Creager coaches 17 of Springboro's Stock Market Game teams.
Leading the game's middle school division was The Playas from McGuffey Foundation School in Oxford, with a portfolio worth $105,446.
Leading the elementary division was Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy team No. 1 with a $100,550 portfolio.
In the adult category, George Stroplos was in the lead.
