OXFORD - A two-and-a-half-hour standoff ended Monday night when police officers fatally wounded a suspect who had been firing weapons in direction of officers at the scene.
Maj. Anthony Dwyer with the Butler County Sheriff's Office identified the victim as 35-year-old Shane Griffin.
Oxford officers and Butler County Sheriff's deputies responded to a trailer park in the 5200 block of College Corner Pike about 4 p.m., after a call from the suspect's estranged girlfriend who was concerned about his well-being, Dywer said.
When officers arrived, Griffin was inside a trailer home, Dwyer said.
"He was barricaded in a trailer. He was firing rounds from the trailer. We had rounds hitting adjacent trailers."
Griffin, who was armed with 9 mm handgun and an assault rifle, came out of the trailer at one point but ignored police commands and returned inside.
Contacted briefly by telephone, Griffin, who Dwyer described as "very violent and aggressive,'' told officers he was going to force them to kill him, the major said.
"It was a very, very difficult situation," Dwyer said. "I think the course was set by him. There was very little negotiation. Unfortunately, he gave us no option."
At about 6:30 p.m., Griffin came out of the trailer and fired shots from both weapons in the direction of police officers, Dwyer said.
An Oxford officer fired two rounds at the suspect and a sheriff's deputy fired one round, Dwyer said. Griffin was pronounced dead at the scene.
Neither the officers nor any of the neighboring residents was injured during the standoff, Dwyer said.
Griffin, who apparently didn't have a permanent address, was staying with friends in various trailers in the trailer park, Dwyer said.
