DEERFIELD TWP. - Construction of a stadium and outdoor athletic facilities for Kings High School is expected to begin in two to three weeks.
Kings has used Galbreath Field in Mason for the past two seasons after lead was discovered at the south end of Kings athletic complex in August 2003. But Galbreath is being torn down once this football season ends.
"If we get some luck with the weather we'll be in by August," said Matthew Koenig, Kings athletic director.
Construction of the $4.1 million athletic complex is being divided into two phases. Tuesday, the Kings Board of Education approved a $1.74 million contract with Danis Building Construction Co. for the first phase. That includes construction of the stadium, an eight-lane all-weather track, the football field with synthetic turf, baseball and softball fields, grading and drainage.
Seating for the stadium, concession stands, press box and restrooms are slated for the second phase. Those projects will go out to bid next January.
The district will take out a loan and use proceeds from a permanent improvement fund to repay the loan. A newly formed group, Restoring Our Foundation, has pledged to pay $500,000 toward the project over three years.
