Secretary of state: Vote should be smooth
The Associated Press
FRANKFORT - Next month's general election in Kentucky should go smoothly, Secretary of State Trey Grayson said Friday.
Kentucky voters should be confident in the state's voting equipment, which has been proven to be "very reliable," in past elections, said Grayson, the state's top election official.
Election officials across the country are paying closer attention to voting equipment this year because of the controversial ending to the 2000 presidential election, he said.
"Kentucky can't become a Florida," Grayson said, referring to problems that state had with punch-card and butterfly ballots.
The Supreme Court halted a recount of ballots in Florida after 36 days and handed a 537-vote victory to George W. Bush. The fight for votes during the re-count introduced words such as butterfly ballots and hanging and pregnant chads to the national lexicon.
Kentucky doesn't have those types of ballots, Grayson said.
