Horror flicks rock it hard, rip it loud

Once upon a time, The Rocky Horror Picture Show spun heads around by mixing monsters with rock 'n' roll.

These days, the soundtrack to the venerable 1975 camp classic sounds almost quaint, with its cavalcade of bouncy tunes and high-drama anthems by the likes of Meat Loaf and lead actor Tim Curry. Current horror movies are likely to arrive drenched in of-the-minute music, from hip-hop to speed metal. Consider musician-filmmaker Rob Zombie, who mixed tunes from Buck Owens and Lionel Ritchie with his own hard-core rantings in the soundtrack for House of 1,000 Corpses.

For fans who like their horror movies loud, the choices are endless. A small sample:

Scream (1996) - The soundtrack to this horror-movie spoof - featuring such artists as Moby, the Connells and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - was a hit with record-buyers and an inspiration for scary movies to come.

I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) - Another big seller emerged from this exercise in teen terror, with music from Southern Culture on the Skids, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Soul Asylum, L7 and Type O Negative.

Spawn (1997) - Shock rocker Marilyn Manson contributed to this hard-edged set, which also featured Stabbing Westward, Henry Rollins, Silverchair and Metallica's Kirk Hammett.

Not Another Teen Movie (2001) - Patterns emerge, with songs from Marilyn Manson and Stabbing Westward, as well as System of a Down, The Crystal Method and Orgy.

Queen of the Damned (2002) - Scorecards ready? Hear Marilyn Manson and Jay Gordon of Orgy, plus Deftones.

Freddy Vs. Jason (2003) - Metal reigned, with original tunes from Slipknot, DevilDriver, Killswitch Engage and Type O Negative.

Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) - Slipknot, Deftones, Killswitch Engage and DevilDriver graduated to horror-movie regulars.
