MADRID MASTERS: Marat Safin defeated David Nalbandian 6-2, 6-4, 6-3 to win the $3 million event and moved closer to locking up a berth in the season-ending Masters Cup in Houston next month. Safin earned $534,000 and 100 points, moving him ahead of Tim Henman into sixth in the battle for the eight spots in the Tennis Masters Cup. Nalbandian stayed in 10th place.
SWISSCOM CHALLENGE: Alicia Molik beat Maria Sharapova 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, snapping the Russian's 12-match winning streak for her third title.
Golf
CHAMPIONS TOUR: Mark McNulty got the big check. Hale Irwin got the big cup. Tom Kite got a big heartbreak. McNulty rallied from five strokes down in the final round, making five birdies in the last eight holes to beat Kite by one stroke at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship in Somona, Calif.
McNulty shot a 6-under 66 to finish at 11-under 277, matching the day's best round and sending Kite to two disheartening results at the season-ending event.
In addition to losing the $435,000 winner's prize to tour rookie McNulty, Kite lost a golden opportunity to steal the Schwab Cup, awarded to the points leader in a season-long competition at 30 tournaments.
Irwin, 59, also struggled, shooting 3 over to finish seventh at 284. But Irwin won his second Schwab Cup and a $1 million annuity with 3,427 points, beating Craig Stadler by 39.
PGA TOUR: Ryan Palmer birdied four straight holes and closed with a 10-under 62 to win the Funai Classic at Disney by three shots over Vijay Singh and Briny Baird. Palmer became the fifth PGA Tour rookie to win this year.

SKATE AMERICA: World champion pairs skater Tatiana Totmianina was released from the hospital, a day after suffering a concussion in a fall during the free skating program in Pittsburgh. Horse racing
KEENELAND: German-born Humaita, ridden by Robby Albarado, edged Aud by a nose to win Sunday's featured $150,000 Rood and Riddle Dowager Stakes for older fillies and mares.
CANADIAN INT.: Sulamani, ridden by Frankie Dettori, overtook Simonas down the stretch, then cruised to a 1 1/2-length victory at the $1.5 million turn race at Toronto's Woodbine Racetrack.
The win was the ninth in 17 career starts for Sulamani and the $900,000 winner's share boosted his career earnings to over $5 million.
Afterward, Simon Crisford, the racing manager for Godolphin, the international stable that owns Sulamani, said retirement is a real possibility for the prized 5-year-old. Dubai's Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum and Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid al Maktoum are Godolphin's principle owners.
Boxing
CHAVEZ JR. WINS: Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. improved to 12-0 late Saturday, stopping Mike Walker 2:21 into their lightweight fight. Referee Bobby Ferrara stopped the fight when Walker was knocked down for the third time in front of 2,525 people mostly supporting Chavez, the son of former six-time world champion Julio Cesar Chavez.
