William Hub, civic-minded architect

He led South Bank Partners

By Mary Lu Listermann
Enquirer staff writer

COVINGTON - William Hub was a civic-minded visionary who used his skill, talent and care to improve his community, cultivate friendships, and nurture his family, according to his daughter, Michele Keating.

Mr. Hub, 63, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Edgewood. He was the principal partner with Hub and Weber Architects in Covington.

He graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a bachelor's degree in architecture. He was a registered architect in Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota and Illinois.

Mr. Hub was a member of the American Institute of Architects, Northern Kentucky chapter; past chairman of Covington's Urban Design Review Board; past chairman of Covington Business Council; member of Kiwanis, and a member of the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce.

He was a founding partner and board member of SouthBank Partners and was a member and past chairman of the Marge Schott-Unnewehr Boys and Girls Club of Northern Kentucky.

He also served on the Art and Architecture Committee for the Diocese of Covington, Marydale Advisory Board, Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church Parish Council, Thomas More College Design Review Board, Covington Building and Housing Code Appeals Board, American Arbitration Association, Northern Kentucky Electric Authority and the Northern Kentucky Goodwill Council.

"To list all of Mr. Hub's accomplishments is not simply minutia, he had a way of segueing his skill into civic contributions,'' said his friend, Wally Pagan.

"For instance, he loved golf. He used his love for the game to create a golf outing to benefit the Boys and Girls Club. He helped generate thousands of dollars for improvements. As an architect, he brought good design decisions to our work with SouthBank and to the historical buildings and streetscapes reviewed for the Covington Urban Design Review Board.''

Along with his daughter, Michelle Keating of Cincinnati, other survivors include his wife, Mary Merritt Hub of Covington; two sons, William Hub II of Chicago and Michael Hub of Indianapolis; daughter Lisa Lesher of Westport, Conn.; stepdaughter Natalie Linstruth of Edgewood; two brothers, Ron Hub of Stanton, Ky., and Steve Hub of Toronto, Canada, and five grandchildren.

Visitation will be 6:30-9 p.m. Thursday at St. Xavier Catholic Church, 607 Sycamore St., Cincinnati.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 2415 Dixie Hwy., Fort Mitchell.

Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Memorials may be made to Marge Schott-Unnewehr Boys and Girls Club, 30 W. 26th St., Covington, KY 41014
