Republicans to celebrate here
The official victory celebration for the Republican Party of Kentucky after the polls close Tuesday will be at the Marriott RiverCenter in Covington.
U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning and 4th District congressional candidate Geoff Davis will also be prepared to celebrate at the Marriott. All supporters are invited to attend.
City gets $96,000 sidewalk grant
The city of Fort Mitchell will officially receive a $96,000 grant today to help pay for a sidewalk on Royal Drive to connect with Buttermilk Pike and Beechwood Road.
A formal presentation will be at 2:30 p.m. in the council chambers at the city building, 2355 Dixie Hwy.
The grant will help pay for the project's estimated cost of $120,000.
The funding comes from an Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act grant, which was awarded from the governor's Office of Local Development.
Teen gets wish to shop for his car
Pep Boys and the Kids Wish Network are helping to make a wish come true for 18-year-old Malachi Brenner.
Malachi, who suffers from an illness called Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor of the kidney, has been granted a $1,000 shopping spree at 1 p.m. today at Pep Boys in Florence. He will be able to buy a stereo system, rims and a variety of other accessories, making his wish to transform his 1994 Firebird into the ultimate driving machine come true.
Kids Wish Network is a nonprofit organization that grants wishes to children between the ages of 3 and 18 who have life-threatening illnesses. Information: www.kidswishnetwork.com.
United Way raises $25,000 over goal
The United Way of Greater Cincinnati raised $61,150,000 during its 2004 campaign, $25,000 more than its goal.
The total includes contributions already turned in, as well as projected final figures on campaigns still under way. Earlier this week, United Way representatives were worried the organization might fall nearly $1 million short of its goal.
Campaign co-chairs James and Vivian Schwab attributed the last-minute windfall to GE Transportation, which had the largest company increase, exceeding its goal by $500,000. The combination of GE area employees, retirees and the GE Foundation raised a total of $4,218,042. The local United Way supports 159 agencies and a dozen other initiatives.
Two killed in Campbell County crash
Two people were killed Thursday night in a car crash on U.S. 27 just south of Alexandria.
The three-vehicle crash occurred about 7:10 p.m. Traffic on the stretch of U.S. 27 was shut down for more than four hours , Campbell County police said.
Two other people hurt in the crash were transported by helicopter to University Hospital in Cincinnati, police said.
The names of the two people killed, and the names and conditions of the two injured had not been released late Thursday.
Investigators were at the scene Thursday night trying to determine how the crash occurred.
