CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Connor Barth kicked a 42-yard field goal on the final play of the game, giving North Carolina a shocking 31-28 upset of No. 4 Miami on Saturday night.

The ball flew just inside the left upright, and soon the field was covered with people, celebrating North Carolina's first win over a top five opponent. Both goal posts went down.

Darian Durant led the Tar Heels (4-4, 3-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) on a 65-yard drive for the winning points, completing all four passes and getting the final 5 yards on a keeper up the middle. He finished 21-for-29 for 266 yards and two touchdowns, and Chad Scott overcame an injured hip to rush for a career-high 175 yards.

Miami (6-1, 3-1) trailed by seven points with 5:24 left, but Brock Berlin drove his team 89 yards to tie it. Devin Hester went in on a sweep from the 4.

No. 2 Oklahoma 38, Oklahoma State 35

STILLWATER, Okla. - Adrian Peterson rushed for 249 yards and Oklahoma State kicker Jason Ricks missed a tying 49-yard field goal with 11 seconds left, allowing Oklahoma to barely avoid another upset by the Cowboys.

Mark Bradley caught a career-high three TD passes for the Sooners.

Oklahoma (8-0, 5-0 Big 12) has won two straight over the No. 20 Cowboys (6-2, 3-2) since losing two costly games in the Bedlam series in 2001 and 2002.

Peterson now has eight consecutive 100-yard games and 1,278 yards this year.

Vernand Morency had 93 yards on 17 carries and two touchdowns, including a 4-yard rush that pulled Oklahoma State within 38-35 with 10:34 left.

No. 12 Michigan 45, Michigan State 37, 3 OT

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Braylon Edwards caught two touchdown passes to help Michigan erase a 17-point deficit in just 5:44 of the fourth quarter and then grabbed a third TD in triple overtime to lift the Wolverines.

No. 12 Michigan (8-1, 6-0 Big Ten) moved a half-game ahead of idle Wisconsin in the conference and kept its hopes alive for a Bowl Championship Series bid. The Spartans (4-4, 3-2) had a chance to win at Michigan Stadium for the first time since 1990, but could not hold a 27-10 lead with 8:43 left.

Edwards caught 11 passes for 189 yards. Freshman Chad Henne was 24-of-35 for 273 yards with four TDs. Michigan's Michael Hart had 33 carries for 224 yards - his third straight 200-yard game - and a TD, but limped off the field during the first overtime.

The Spartans were without standout quarterback Drew Stanton after he hurt his shoulder late in the first half. DeAndra Cobb scored on a 72-yard run early in the first quarter and on a 64-yard run to put the Spartans ahead by 17 points midway through the fourth quarter. Cobb finished with 205 yards on 22 carries.

Maryland 20, No. 5 Florida St. 17

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Joel Statham threw for 333 yards and ran for a score for the Terrapins.

Florida State (6-2, 4-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) came in with a six-game winning streak and a 14-0 record against Maryland (4-4, 2-3), which had totaled just 17 points in losing three straight conference games.

The Seminoles fell behind 20-10 before turning to former starting quarterback Chris Rix at the start of the fourth quarter. Rix threw his first touchdown pass of the season, a 16-yarder to Chauncey Stovall with 7:43 remaining that made it 20-17.

Florida State had two more chances, but one drive led to a missed field goal and another ended with a fourth-down incompletion.

No. 1 USC 42, Washington State 12

PULLMAN, Wash. - Reggie Bush and LenDale White each scored two touchdowns, Dwayne Jarrett caught two more from scores from Matt Leinart and No. 1 Southern California won in a rout.

In rolling up 426 yards of offense, USC (8-0, 5-0 Pac-10) extended its winning streak to 17 games and 12 straight in the Pac-10 Conference.

The Trojans defense held the Cougars (3-5, 1-4) to 156 yards, sacking quarterback Alex Brink five times, forcing seven fumbles and limiting the Cougars to minus-9 yards rushing.

No. 3 Auburn 35, Mississippi 14

OXFORD, Miss. - Jason Campbell rushed for two touchdowns and threw for another, and No. 3 Auburn clinched a spot in the Southeastern Conference championship game with a 35-14 win over Mississippi on Saturday night.

Campbell, the league's most efficient quarterback, was 11-of-22 for 234 yards and had two 1-yard touchdown runs for the Tigers (9-0, 6-0), who scored 28 points after halftime to lock up the Western Division title before their first off week of the season.

Flatt was 12-of-20 for 225 yards and two touchdowns for Ole Miss (3-5, 2-3).

No. 8 Texas 31, Colorado 7

BOULDER, Colo. - Vince Young got a couple of bad throws out of his system early and No. 8 Texas rolled from there, getting 141 yards rushing from Cedric Benson.

Benson and Young ran for a pair of touchdowns apiece, linebacker Aaron Harris and safety Michael Griffin combined on a pair of turnovers and the Longhorns (7-1, 4-1 Big 12) stayed in the running for a BCS bowl by winning their third straight since losing to Oklahoma.

Colorado (4-4, 1-4) struggled on offense. The Buffaloes managed only one first down in the first half and didn't make it past the 50 until the fourth quarter.

No. 9 Utah 51, San Diego St. 28

SAN DIEGO - Alex Smith threw a career-high five touchdown passes, and Utah remained undefeated with a 51-28 victory.

The Utes (8-0, 4-0 Mountain West) are attempting to become the first team from a non-BCS conference to participate in the Bowl Championship Series.

Utah moved up to No. 6 in the BCS standings last week, putting it in position for an automatic bid to one of the four marquee postseason games.

Smith was 22-of-33 for 298 yards, with no interceptions, and gained 45 yards on 15 carries. Paris Warren had 10 catches for 113 yards and two TDs.

San Diego State (2-6, 0-4) lost its fifth straight game. The Aztecs remained winless in 14 games against top-10 opponents, and have lost 17 straight overall against ranked teams.

No. 10 Georgia 31, Florida 24

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - David Greene threw three touchdown passes, including a big one in the fourth quarter, as the Bulldogs snapped a six-game losing streak against rival Florida.

Greene tied Eric Zeier's school record with 67 touchdown passes and matched Peyton Manning for the most victories (39) by a starting quarterback in NCAA Division I-A history.

More importantly, Greene ended years of frustration for the Bulldogs at the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. Georgia had lost 13 of the last 14 in the series.

The Bulldogs (7-1, 5-1 Southeastern Conference) scored touchdowns on their first three possessions - eliminating whatever emotional edge the Gators might have had from this week's firing of coach Ron Zook. Georgia controlled the first half and led 24-7 early in the third period when Florida (4-4, 2-4) seized momentum with two huge plays and cut the lead to 24-21.

No. 11 Tennessee 43, South Carolina 29

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Erik Ainge threw three touchdown passes as Tennessee overcame early offensive problems to win its 12th straight over South Carolina.

Cedric Houston added a career-high 190 yards rushing and a TD as the Vols (7-1, 5-1 SEC) rolled past the Gamecocks (5-3, 3-3), who were thought to be Tennessee's last real roadblock to the Southeastern Conference title game. The Vols have beaten Georgia and only must get past league doormats Kentucky and Vanderbilt next month to get to the Georgia Dome on Dec. 4.

The Gamecocks continued one of the ugliest streaks in coach Lou Holtz's tenure: they are 0-10 the past three seasons when needing a victory to qualify for the postseason.

No. 15 West Virginia 35, Rutgers 30

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Chris Henry caught a 39-yard scoring pass and set up another touchdown with a long catch before being kicked out of the game.

Rasheed Marshall threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Moutaineers (7-1, 3-0 Big East) beat Rutgers (4-4, 1-3) for the 10th straight time. Ryan Hart threw three touchdown passes for Rutgers, which made the game interesting by scoring twice after Henry was ejected.

With West Virginia leading 21-17 early in the fourth quarter, Marshall and Henry combined on a 69-yard pass to the Rutgers 6. After being tackled, Henry crossed his arms and started yapping at defenders, drawing his first unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

On West Virginia's next possession, Henry caught the 39-yard touchdown pass from Marshall, beating Scarlet Knights cornerback Joe Porter for a jump ball in the end zone. The two landed together. Henry tossed the ball at Porter and appeared to kick at him, drawing another flag.

Baylor 35, No. 16 Texas A&M 34, OT

WACO, Texas - Baylor coach Guy Morriss gathered his players around him, took a look at his weary bunch and went with the only decision that made sense to him.

The Bears had to end the game, win or lose, with a 2-point conversion.

"I had a gut feeling that it was right thing to do at that point to drive the nail in the coffin," Morriss said. "We wanted to teach our kids how to drop the hammer on someone."

Did they ever.

Shawn Bell found Dominique Zeigler in the end zone for the winning score a play after they connected on a 12-yard touchdown pass, lifting Baylor to a 35-34 overtime victory over No. 16 Texas A&M on Saturday night.

After Texas A&M's Keith Joseph scored on a 16-yard touchdown run on the first possession of overtime, Bell and Zeigler led the Bears (3-5, 1-4 Big 12) to the stunning finish.

Bell completed a pass for no gain on the Bears' first play, Anthony Krieg rushed for 13 yards on second down and then Bell rolled out to his right before finding Zeigler just inside the goal line.

Morriss boldly decided to go for the 2-point conversion, hoping to catch the Aggies (6-2, 4-1) by surprise.

The call stunned even Zeigler, who missed the huddle because he was getting treated for leg cramps on the bench.

"I didn't even know we were going for 2," he said. "All of a sudden they said, 'Get in Ziggy. We're going for 2.'"

It worked to perfection.

Baylor ran the same play again, with Bell scrambling around to his right looking for anyone in a green jersey. He zipped a pass to Zeigler just in front of A&M defensive back Melvin Bullitt for the score, setting off a wild celebration at a school that's had few things to party about in recent years.

Northwestern 13, No. 17 Purdue 10

EVANSTON, Ill. - Noah Herron ran 3 yards for a touchdown with 38 seconds left to lift Northwestern (4-4, 3-2 Big Ten) to its second victory over a top 25 team this year.

Purdue (5-3, 2-3) had a final chance, but Taylor Stubblefield couldn't hold on to a 40-yard-long pass into the end zone as time expired. The pass came from backup quarterback Brandon Kirsch, who replaced one-time Heisman Trophy favorite Kyle Orton at the end of the third quarter.

It was the third straight loss for Purdue, which started the season 5-0. Orton put up gaudy numbers in those five wins. But he was uninspiring in back-to-back losses to Wisconsin and Michigan, and downright blah against the Wildcats - in part because of a left hip injury. He was pulled for Kirsch after throwing his fifth interception of the year. Orton also had a fumble in the first quarter that set up Northwestern's first score.

On Oct. 2, Northwestern defeated No. 7 Ohio State 33-27 in overtime. Herron's 1-yard touchdown run was the decisive score in that game, which also was played in Evanston.

No. 19 LSU 24, Vanderbilt 7

BATON ROUGE, La. - Alley Broussard ran for 80 yards and a touchdown, spearheading a strong game by LSU.

LSU (6-2, 3-2 Southeastern Conference) rushed for 273 yards, with Joseph Addai adding 77 and quarterback Marcus Randall 68. The Tigers also got a 65-yard punt return for a TD by Skyler Green.

Jay Cutler completed 10 of 34 passes for 111 yards for the Commodores (2-6, 1-4).

No. 23 Iowa 23, Illinois 13

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Drew Tate threw a pair of 19-yard touchdown passes to Ed Hinkel and added a 5-yard run for a score, sending the Illini to their 14th straight Big Ten loss.

Tate's run capped a 16-point third quarter that helped break open a 7-7 game for the Hawkeyes (6-2, 4-1). He finished 24-of-34 for 243 yards and had one interception. Hinkel caught five passes for 108 yards.

Illinois (2-7, 0-6) was held to a mere 58 yards rushing and dropped its sixth consecutive game.

Indiana 30, No. 24 Minnesota 21

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana's Will Lumpkin returned an interception 42 yards for a touchdown and Matt LoVecchio threw for two scores as the Hoosiers scored 23 unanswered points for the upset.

The victory ended Indiana's five-game losing streak. It marked the first time since 1987 that Indiana (3-5, 1-4 Big Ten) has beaten two ranked teams in the same season and was the Hoosiers' seventh straight win over Minnesota in Bloomington. Indiana's last win before Saturday was at then No. 24 Oregon.

Minnesota (6-3, 3-3) lost for the third time in four weeks. The nation's No. 3 rushing team was held to 169 yards, more than 100 yards below its season average.
