Small colleges

The Associated Press

Lakota West graduate Mike Lovell rushed for 164 yards and two touchdowns, and undefeated and No. 25 Mount St. Joseph clinched the Heartland Conference title by rallying for a 25-13 victory over Bluffton in a Division III game Saturday.

The Lions (8-0, 5-0) closed to 13-10 on Lovell's 80-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and went ahead 17-13 on his 1-yard TD run early in the fourth. Mount St. Joseph pushed its lead to 10 on South Dearborn graduate Bryan Hamrock's 17-yard touchdown pass to Elder grad Andy Wellendorf with 11:27 remaining.

Ricky Story (Western Hills) added 119 yards rushing for the Lions, and Hamrock completed 8 of 21 passes for 62 yards with an interception.

The Beavers (4-4, 2-2) took an early 13-3 lead.

Maryville 28, Thomas More 26

Thomas More's two-point conversion attempt after time expired was intercepted in the end zone, and the Saints fell to Maryville College at Highlands High.

As time expired, junior quarterback Nate Berkley (Bellevue) connected with junior receiver Mike Rieck (Glen Este) on a 57-yard touchdown pass that went through the hands of a defender.

The two-point conversion was necessary due to a blocked extra point early in the fourth quarter.

Junior Tyran Thompson rushed for three touchdowns and 170 yards on 26 carries for the Saints (4-3). Maryville is 3-4.

Drake 13, Dayton 6

DAYTON, Ohio - James Adams recovered Steve Verhoff's fumble at the 1-yard line on the game's final play to preserve the upset of Dayton.

The Flyers, whose first 12 drives resulted in 10 punts and two field goals, moved 72 yards in the closing minute but failed to punch in the tying score despite four tries from the Bulldogs' 2.

Brandon Staley threw an incomplete pass on first down, Matt Mong was stuffed for no gain on second down, and Staley's pass fell incomplete on third down.

Verhoff fumbled on fourth down, and Adams recovered with no time remaining on the clock to give Drake the Pioneer League North Division title.

.

Scott Phaydavong led the Bulldogs (7-2, 4-0) with 87 yards rushing on 16 carries. Dayton (7-2, 2-1) managed only 134 yards on 47 carries, an average of 2.9 yards per rush. Staley finished 8-of-17 passing for 124 yards without an interception.

Marietta 48, Wilmington 7

MARIETTA, Ohio - Steven Wagner ran for 122 yards and two touchdowns and Chris Sidick added 105 yards rushing and two scores as Marietta overwhelmed Wilmington.
