Moore, Stipe: Create 'new minority' on Tuesday
On Wednesday's stop of his 60-city "Slacker Tour" of college campuses in battleground states, filmmaker Michael Moore, joined by rockers R.E.M. (who played the Taft Theatre that night), urged a crowd of about 2,000 at the University of Cincinnati to get off the couch and vote, preferably for John Kerry. Moore asked Ohioans to vote against anti-gay measures and promised that Democrats will treat Republicans - "the new minority" - with more tolerance than the GOP has treated gays. "Under President Kerry, Republicans will be able to marry other Republicans," he quipped. R.E.M. didn't perform, but singer Michael Stipe took a swipe at some campus architecture, calling the newly renovated Tangeman University Center "ugly."
