MESSAGE SCARF

Diane Naegel has been knitting her "rockin" knit scarves and accessories at home in her Clifton apartment. But maybe not for long. The word - or should we say message - is out.

Sex in the City star Sarah Jessica Parker owns one of Naegel's vintage print numbers, covered with a pattern of apples ($64).

When the Kerry/Edwards campaign came into town, Naegel made a deal to knit her message scarves to serve the candidates' cause.

Her cutting-edge scarves feature messages that include quotes from historical figures and sayings in French and Latin. Clients can custom-order a message or choose from a great group of patterns, including pears, hearts and skulls.

Naegel's scarves are at MetroNation, downtown, or next month at Suki in Hyde Park and Heaven in Oakley. Price range: $54-$89. Check out www.lulette.com.

FAUX LUXE SCARF It's a soft, sensuous fake available at Lazarus-Macy's in an array of colors - turquoise, plum, rose, apple green - and sophisticated weaves. The olive green "Cashmink" muffler from German scarf maker V.Fraas retails for about $30. Woven from a man-made acrylic fiber, the scarf has both the softness and warmth of cashmere and the luster of mink. It's the vertical weave process that makes this material so soft. And, it's hand washable.

HANDMADE SCARF If you are shopping for a uniquely beautiful scarf, be sure to stop at the Cincinnati Art Museum shop. A favorite is the 100 percent silk beauty pictured here, called "Jest." Handmade in India, it's a gossamer sheet of off-white silk with tiny bows sewn on the surface. $92. (513) 721-5204.
