Doe Run Lake area site of nature hike
Fall colors should still be around for the Kenton County Parks and Recreation Doe Run Nature Trail hike with naturalist Peggy Kelly 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.
Kelly, a botanist and environmental educator, has been exploring the Doe Run Lake area for many years.
The Doe Run Lake area is one of the last remaining, easily accessible but very rugged places in Kenton County, while the Doe Run Nature Trail is for hikers and nature lovers.
The hike is three hours of moderate difficulty. Bring water and a snack and wear comfortable shoes. The hike is free but the group size will be limited. Meet at the Nature Trail entrance - from the boat launch, look up the hill to your left and the rustic wooden sign. Pre-registration is required.
Information, directions and pre-registration, call (859) 525-7529. Information can also be found at the Parks and Recreation tab on Kenton County's Web site: www.kentoncounty.org.
Guts Frisbee game at Ft. Thomas armory
Kenton County Parks and Recreation and Fort Thomas Recreation are presenting a new program called Indoor Guts Frisbee at the Fort Thomas Armory.
The next scheduled practice is 6:30-8:30 p.m. Sunday, and the fee is $2 per person per night.
Guts is a game of high-speed throws and one-handed catches played between two five-person teams facing one another on a court 14 meters, or about 15 yards, apart. Points are scored by throwing a pro-model Frisbee as hard as you can within the reach of any member of the other team so the opponent is unable to catch it cleanly with one hand.
Games are to 21 points, win by two.
For information and directions, call Kenton County Recreation at (859) 525-7529 or Fort Thomas Recreation at (859) 781-1700.
County reconsiders paying for deputies
LEBANON - Police response times in Union Township could grow longer if the Warren County commissioners deny a request to continue paying for two deputies for South Lebanon.
The county pays the salaries and benefits for two of the village's five deputies. Those deputies then patrol neighboring Union Township at no cost to the community.
Village and township officials asked Thursday that county commissioners renew an agreement that funds the two deputies.
The current agreement expires at the end of the year.
The cost to the county is about $118,000.
If the county commissioners don't renew, other county deputies would answer calls in Union Township, lengthening response times.
Commissioner Pat South said they will consider the request as they move through the budget process and should have an answer by December.
Fire department gets donated equipment
DEERFIELD TWP. - Thanks to an agreement with the Intercommunity Cable Regulatory Commission, the township fire department is better able to distribute safety information.
Deerfield's is the first fire department in Warren County to use a computer program that allows the department to gather information, generate training videos and create public service announcements, the township announced.
The regulatory commission provided the department a new Apple computer, digital camera/recorder and the necessary software.
The six-month training starts this month.
