Robber forces ride from store worker
COLERAIN TWP. - A robber not only stole cash from a Colerain Township restaurant late Tuesday, but he forced an employee to drive him away.
There were no injuries.
The man entered Penn Station, 8880 Colerain Ave., about 10 p.m., pointed a handgun at the employees and ordered them into a back room, Hamilton County sheriff's deputies said.
The man ordered the employees onto the floor before forcing the store manager to open the safe. After obtaining cash, the robber ordered an employee outside, and a second person joined them.
The employee was forced to drive the pair to Banning Road near North Bend Road, where they fled.
Judge to reconsider sentencing options
HAMILTON - A Butler County judge has set a March 14 hearing to reconsider sentencing options for a man who was once sentenced to death in a triple slaying.
Because of federal court rulings, the death sentence of Rhett Gilbert DePew was set aside. Now, officials say, DePew must be resentenced under Ohio law that was in effect in 1984, when Teresa Jones, 27, her daughter, Aubrey, 7, and Jones' sister, Elizabeth Burton, 12, were stabbed to death.
Dan Eichel, first assistant prosecutor, said Ohio law 20 years ago lacked a "life without parole" prison term, but offered life terms with parole eligibility after 20 years or after 30 years. However, Eichel said the law could allow triple the maximum in this case because it involves three victims.
Tennessee escapee surrenders in Oxford
OXFORD - An escaped Tennessee homicide suspect surrendered Wednesday.
Jerry W. Wright, 33, who escaped from Monroe County, Tenn., Saturday, is being held in the Butler County jail awaiting his return to Tennessee.
Deputies in Tennessee had been working with Butler County police agencies to try to find where Wright might have been staying since his escape.
