Man dies after driving under semi's rear axle
JACKSON TWP. - A 72-year-old Batavia man died after driving his car underneath the rear axle of a semi-trailer Friday night.
Shortly before 8 p.m., truck driver Joseph A. Vilvens, 63, of Batavia, was backing his semi-trailer into his driveway on Ohio 133 in Jackson Township when Bryant L. Nichols, heading north on the road, drove his 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis underneath the trailer's rear axle, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Nichols, who was not wearing a seat belt, was taken by helicopter to University Hospital, where he died. Vilvens was not injured.
Charges are pending in the crash, which remains under investigation, according to the highway patrol.
