READING - A man trying to elude Evendale Police crashed his car into the rear of another car on Reading Road Sunday, killing a 68-year-old woman, police said.
The woman's car ended up on its top after striking a utility pole in front of a used car lot in the 9600 block of Reading Road.
The vehicle being pursued spun around several times before coming to rest between two commercial buildings on the other side of the road.
The name of the woman, who was alone in her car, had not been released late Sunday.
The incident began at 5:05 p.m. when Evendale police received a 911 cell phone call about a domestic disturbance at Walgreen's at 10400 Reading Road, Evendale Police Chief Gary Foust said.
When an Evendale police cruiser arrived, the suspect drove out of the parking lot heading south on Reading Road at a high rate of speed, followed by police using lights and sirens, Foust said.
A short time later, the man crashed into the rear of the woman's southbound car, Foust said. Less than seven minutes passed between the 911 call and the crash.
After the crash, the driver resisted and was subdued with a Taser gun, Faust said.
Foust identified the driver as Randy Smith, 52, of Hartwell. Smith and a female passenger in his car were taken to University Hospital. The two were the subject of the earlier 911 call made by another party, Faust said.
Smith was in serious condition late Sunday. The name of Smith's passenger and her condition had not been released late Sunday, but Foust said her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
Faust said police plan to meet with the Hamilton County prosecutor's office to discuss possible charges against Smith.
Sunday's fatal crash was the second one in six weeks involving a police chase. Kathy Ballard, 49, of Kennedy Heights, was killed Sept. 29 when her car was struck by a man in a stolen pickup being pursued by officers from Norwood, Cincinnati, Elmwood Place and St. Bernard. That crash occurred at Section and Ross avenues in Norwood.
