Phelps charged with drunken driving

Six-time Olympic champion Michael Phelps, 19, was arrested last Thursday in Salisbury, Md., and charged with drunken driving.
Phelps also was charged with violation of a license restriction and failure to obey a stop sign. The legal drinking age in Maryland is 21.
If Phelps is convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol, he could receive a year in jail, a $1,000 fine and 12 points on his driver's license for a first offense.
He could be subject to a 60-day sentence and a $500 fine if convicted on a first offense on the charge of driving while impaired.

Nuts & bolts: Cincinnati (91) and Philadelphia (112) combined for 203 penalty minutes in Saturday's game, a two-team single-game franchise high for the Ducks. Philadelphia's 112 penalty minutes were a single-game high against Cincinnati, breaking the previous record of 111 set by the Phantoms Nov. 14, 2003 . . . The Ducks lead the AHL in penalty minutes (362) and minor penalty minutes (101). They rank second in the AHL with an average of 36.20 penalty minutes per game . . . The Ducks have outscored opponents 11-8 in the first period. However, they've been outscored 12-3 in the third . . . Friday's game vs. Manitoba begins a stretch that sees the Ducks play 14 games in 23 days. Just four of the games in that stretch will be played at Cincinnati Gardens.

HALL OF FAME: Ray Bourque entered the shrine in Toronto with two other outstanding defensemen, Paul Coffey and Larry Murphy; builder Cliff Fletcher and hockey writer Jim Kelley.
Bourque played for 22 NHL seasons and was a five-time Norris Trophy winner. The former Bruins great capped his career by winning the Stanley Cup with Colorado in 2001.
Coffey won three Stanley Cups in Edmonton and one in Pittsburgh. His 48 goals in 1985-86 are the most by a defenseman in one season and that year he set the record for longest consecutive-games points streak by a defenseman (28). He won the Norris Trophy three times.
Murphy won two championship rings with Pittsburgh and two with Detroit. The records he set in 1980-81 for rookie defensemen - most assists (60) and most points (76) - still stand.

DANTON SENTENCED: Former NHL tough guy Mike Danton, 24, was sentenced to 7 1/2 years in prison for trying to have his agent killed. Danton said nothing as U.S. District Judge William Stiehl imposed the sentence on the former St. Louis Blue.
Horse racing
CHURCHILL DOWNS: The Louisville track banned about a dozen jockeys from the rest of its fall meet after the riders threatened to boycott upcoming races in a dispute over health insurance.
Jockeys scratched from the rest of the meet, which runs until Nov. 27, include national victory leader Rafael Bejarano, Robby Albarado, Calvin Borel, Mark Guidry, Willie Martinez, Brian Peck and Craig Perret.
At least a dozen jockeys at Churchill decided to keep racing, including Pat Day.
KEENELAND: Unbridled Elaine, winner of the 2001 Breeders' Cup Distaff, brought $4.4 million Monday, the first day of the November Breeding Stock Sale.

NKU SOCCER: The Norse women's team (15-4-1) received a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament and will meet Ashland (17-1-1) in the first round of the Great Lakes Regional Friday at Kenosha, Wis. The Norse are making their sixth straight trip to the tournament.
High schools
MERCY: The Mercy girls' cross country team finished sixth in the Division I team standings. Due to a computer glitch, official results were not released by the Ohio High School Athletic Association until Monday. Mercy had been in eighth place.
NOTRE DAME: Nine senior athletes from Notre Dame Academy will sign national letters of intent Wednesday.
They are: Swimming: Emily Brunemann (Michigan), Courtney Sorrell (Western Kentucky), Katie Theissen (Illinois). Soccer: Hillary Johnson (Morehead State), Leslie King (Morehead State). Volleyball: Ashley Klare (Samford), Emily Cahill (Belmont), Kristina Eisenmenger (Northern Kentucky). Rowing: Aaren Meehan (Louisville).
