Donald Busch Jr. smiles as he counts his blessings and talks to a highway worker after a tornado picked up his pickup on Interstate 71 in Blue Ash as he traveled to work April 9. Mr. Busch of Blanchester said he saw bright blue flashes in the distance, hit a wall of white, was pelted by heavy objects and then went airborne. Other vehicles encountered similar conditions. Tractor trailers were blown over, and just across the road from this scene, a motorist was thrown from his car and killed. I left my house (five miles from this scene) shortly after the tornado hit, anxious to determine the damage. I quickly encountered some debris and stopped cold when I saw Mr. Busch's overturned truck. After maneuvering past twisted metal and wood strewn across the highway, I photographed the truck before suddenly thinking: “Where's the driver?” I yelled to see whether anyone was inside the cab, and Mr. Busch called back. He was calmly sitting on the concrete barrier, injury-free. Although several rescue workers had arrived on scene, no one had yet noticed Mr. Busch due to the darkness. Charles Smith, who was driving near Mr. Busch when the tornado hit, lay dying on the other side of the highway.
