Teen faces homicide charge after chase

SPRINGFIELD TWP. - A Westwood teenager being chased by police after a gas theft Wednesday night now faces charges in the death of an innocent woman killed as she walked along the roadway.

Vernon Fears, 18, was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide and failure to comply with a police officer. Court records say the 1991 Dodge Spirit he was driving hit Rebecca V. Maynard, 52She was pronounced dead just before 8 p.m. at Mercy Hospital in Mount Airy.

The incident started when the owner of the Ameristop at Pippin and Struble roads in Colerain Township reported the gas drive-off. Hamilton County Sheriff's deputies chased the Spirit, which ran through a stop sign on Hamilton Avenue at Springdale Road and was hit by another car before running into Maynard.

Fears also was charged with theft.
