Teacher's Aide
Kemberley Alexander
Kemberley Alexander, a 26-year-old single mother of three boys, stands on a McMicken Avenue sidewalk and shakes her head.
No, things have not gotten better, she says.
‘‘It’s worse than a year ago. I’ve heard a whole bunch of people saying they’re moving.’’
Ms. Alexander, a part-time teacher’s aide at Vine Street Elementary School, points to a second-story screenless window in the three-story building behind her.
‘‘We was right there in that window (last April). There was a whole bunch of police out here shooting everybody.’’
The scene is calmer now. As she speaks, a young man chases another up the sidewalk and slams him into a moving Plymouth van. But save for ego, no one seems hurt.
What the neighborhood needs, Ms. Alexander suggests, is ‘‘more police out on the streets.
‘‘I see a few,’’ she says, ‘‘but not like they need.’’
