Batavia has defensive star in Ray

SBC spotlight

By Dave Schutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

When David Ray transfered from Edgewood to Batavia three years ago, Bulldogs coach Jamie Corrill wasn't impressed.

“Until David put on the pads, I saw him as a another nice kid with some size,” Corrill said. “But the first day in pads, he was dynamite. At that time, I knew he would be a great nose guard.”

A 6-foot-2, 270-pound se nior, Ray is considered the best returning defensive player in the Southern Buckeye Conference.

“David has good speed and pursues up and down the line very well,” Corrill said. “He's so strong and aggressive that some teams put the center and both guards on him. He was first-team all-state as a junior.”

Colleges are looking at Ray as both a nose guard and an offensive lineman.

“David has the mentality of a defensive player,” Corrill said. “Some coaches think he may also be the best offensive lineman in the SBC. There's no quit in him on either side of ball.”

Ray will be backed up by Jantsen Dunn, a 6-3, 220-pound linebacker who Corrill also thinks will be heavily recruited.

“Jantsen is the best outside linebacker we've had in quite a few years at Batavia,” Corrill said.
