Edgewood 21, Kings 0

Moore makes big hit in fullback debut

KINGS MILLS — Edgewood's Matt Moore saw little action on offense during the 1999 season, sticking with the starting defensive tackle position.

With the Kings defense keying on Edgewood quarterback Brandon Osborne and tailback Ryan White, Moore — the starting fullback — helped lead the Cougars to a 21-0 victory Thursday at Galbreath Field.

“I practiced at fullback last year but never ran the ball,” the 5-10, 165-pound junior said. “I didn't expect to get the ball much tonight, but I'm happy with the performance.”

Moore carried 11 times for 142 yards (12.9 average) and was named game MVP. He also had six tackles on defense, three for losses.

“Matt's basically the only junior in the lineup,” Edgewood coach Steve Channell said. “The fullback is a part of the offense and Matt is very quick and came up with several key runs.”

Moore's 48-yard run in the second quarter set up the Cougars' first TD, and his 14-yard reception late in the quarter came during the second TD drive.

White, who scored all three touchdowns on runs of 2, 5 and 1 yards, rushed for 96 yards on 17 carries. Osborne was held to 8 yards on three carries.

“It wasn't me who won the game,” said White, a senior tailback. “Without the offensive line, I couldn't have done it tonight or any game.”

Although Kings failed to score, coach Andy Olds was pleased with the play of the defense and predicted a successful season.

“Our offense struggled, but we're going to get a lot better,” Olds said. “Our defense played well and I think Steve (Channell) will tell you that they'll see us in the playoffs.”

Edgewood rushed for 310 yards; Kings had 124 yards on the ground and 60 through the air.
