The Crosstown Shootout is on the verge of going nationwide.

Xavier and the University of Cincinnati are negotiating with ESPN to make the annual game part of the all-sports network's "Rivalry Week," which this season is set for the final week in January. The game date is not set, but one possibility is Thursday, Jan. 28, at the Shoemaker Center.

UC Athletic Director Bob Goin said he, like the coaches for both schools, would prefer the game in December, removed from league competition. It was played before the conference schedule the past two seasons, but the Bearcats and Musketeers had trouble finding a mutually acceptable date before Christmas this year.

Goin said his concern is that both schools will be able to keep the Shootout, an important revenue generator, in their local syndication packages.

"There is a mechanism for ESPN to black out the Cincinnati area (leaving the local telecast to UC and XU networks)," Goin said. "If we can do that, it could work."
