Garvin Davis, a 6-foot-10 center who signed a letter of intent last November to attend Xavier, said Sunday night that he is academically ineligible to compete as a freshman and will not be coming to Xavier. Davis, who last year attended Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va., did not achieve the necessary combined SAT score and grade-point average.
"I'll just have to go other places," he said. "I haven't really made up my mind yet what I'm going to do. I might go to junior college, I might go to Division II.
"I was disappointed because I really wanted to be at Xavier. I've just got to move on with things."
Davis is the second player within a week to announce that he will be ineligible. Aaron Turner also will be academically ineligible this fall but said he is a partial qualifier and will still attend Xavier and practice with the team.
Davis is considered a non-qualifier, meaning he could not practice, compete or receive athletic financial aid.
He was not considered an immediate impact recruit, but rather one who could perhaps help down the line. Xavier is left with two centers: 6-10 sophomore Reggie Butler and 6-10 junior college transfer Obi Harris.
Davis said Xavier coach Skip Prosser wished him luck. "He said if I do go to junior college they might look at me, I guess, when I come out, but then again they might not," Davis said.
Prosser could not be reached Sunday night.
After averaging 12.2 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks, Davis was suspended from the Hargrave team in early February. Davis said his suspension followed a fight during practice with high-profile teammate Korleone Young, who was drafted in the second round (40th overall) by the Detroit Pistons.
Davis finished the school year at Hargrave. "I matured a little bit, I think," he said."I think I know how to handle situations now."
