Xavier gets JUCO big man

BY MICHAEL PERRY
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Xavier convinced Marcus Mason to cancel a trip to Hawaii and make a commitment to play basketball for XU in the fall.

The 6-foot-9, 245-pound sophomore center from Santa Monica (Calif.) College told Xavier coaches Sunday before leaving Cincinnati that he would sign a national letter of intent. Marvin Menzies, Santa Monica's associate head coach, confirmed Wednesday that Mason was to sign his letter and send it out Wednesday night.

Mason, a Los Angeles native, averaged almost 14 points and 10 rebounds for Santa Monica. He will have two years of eligibility at Xavier.

He had already visited Fresno State and was scheduled to visit Hawaii.

“He's got great mitts and a big-time body,” said Jerry Mullen of Mullen's Roundball Review. “He can score; he's got a nice touch.”

Mason joins a recruiting class that includes guards Lionel Chalmers (Albany, N.Y.) and David Young (New Castle, Pa.) and forward David West (Hargrave Military Academy). Brandon McIntosh, a 6-5 guard-forward from Roger Bacon High School, also will be offered a scholarship if he finishes his freshman year at Xavier in good academic standing.
