Xavier Notebook
Frey playing well in starting role
BY MICHAEL PERRY
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Sophomore forward Kevin Frey continues to make the most of his move into Xavier's starting lineup.
Frey scored 14 points and grabbed five rebounds in the Musketeers' 92-48 victory over St.Mary's College on Tuesday night, giving him three straight games in double figures since he replaced Aaron Turner as a starter.
Through XU's first six games, Frey averaged 5.2 points and 3.7 rebounds.
As a starter, he has averaged 18.3 points and 5.3 boards.
Turner was suspended for the Central Michigan game for violating a team rule and now has been suspended indefinitely for academic reasons. He attended Tuesday night's game and sat in the stands. He has not been working out with the Musketeers but said after the game that he would be back at practice Christmas night.
Frey finished 4-of-8 from the field, made his only 3-point try and was 5-of-6 from the foul line.
Improved Darnell
Darnell Williams has improved the past two games, averaging 14.5 points on 8-of- 15 shooting against UC and St. Mary's.
The senior had come into the Skyline Chili Crosstown Shootout in a terrible shooting slump.
I think he took a big step forward Saturday, and I think he really played well tonight, coach Skip Prosser said. I think he's very confident now. He's still not taking it to the basket like he did ... but I think he's getting better.
Rating game
Xavier is knocking at the door of The Associated Press Top 25. The Musketeers received the 27th-most votes in the poll that came out Monday.
XU was last ranked on Nov.20, 1998, when it was No.23. The Musketeers dropped out the next week after losing to Pittsburgh 94-76 in Puerto Rico. They were one spot out, at 26th, on Jan.24, 1999, then lost consecutive games to Cincinnati and Dayton.
Jersey update
Xavier won't be wearing its gray home uniforms any time soon.
The blue paint from student fans' bodies that got on some Xavier players in the aftermath of the 66-64 victory over Cincinnati Saturday would not come out. Xavier sent the jerseys to the company that made them with no luck. So, new jerseys are being ordered.
Notable numbers
Junior point guard Maurice McAfee was 1-of-5 from the field all 3-pointers and scored just seven points against the Gaels. He had been the only Musketeer to score in double figures every game. That streak is over. ... Sophomore Lloyd Price, who scored eight points, missed all three of his 3-point attempts, but he had four assists and one turnover. ... All four walk-ons were in the game for the last two minutes.
